Two Institutions - One Centre for Photography
During 2002/03, the Fotostiftung Schweiz and the Fotomuseum Winterthur converted part of the "Schleife" industrial site into premises for a multi-faceted platform for the medium of photography. The two independent institutions each have a different aim in the jointly run centre: whereas the emphasis of the Fotostiftung Schweiz is on Swiss photography from its beginnings to the present, the Fotomuseum Winterthur focuses primarily on international contemporary and historical photography. A total of 1300m2 is available for changing exhibitions and presentations of the collections, and the premises also comprise air-conditioned depots for black and white and colour photography, a library, seminar rooms, a shop, a lounge, and the café-bistro "George" run by Chantal Aloui.
The conversion project was financed primarely by the Volkart Foundation.
The new centre for photography is situated on both sides of the Grüzenstrasse. The existing premises of the Fotomuseum Winterthur on Grüzenstrasse 44 accommodate the changing exhibition spaces, rooms for educational programs, offices, a workshop and storage space. The new building accommodates Exhibition spaces for the collection exhibitions of the Fotomuseum Winterthur and the changing exhibitions of the Fotostiftung Schweiz as well as all the rooms for the joint functions of the two institutions such as library, seminar rooms, storage facilities, museum shop, and the museum café-bistro "George".
